Welcome to the Sword Coast, on the shores of the Sea of Swords. The city of Baldur’s Gate lies before you, and you can see that the economic stability of the entire region is dangerously close to the edge -thanks to a lack of iron ore. Without iron, there is no way to make weapons or tools. Without weapons or tools, there is no way to fight off bandits or invaders and worse still, no way to farm enough food for the people to live on come winter. Without food to live on in the lean months of winter, and without protection from the enemy outside the gates, the fragile thread of civilization that binds people into a coherent society will snap, and chaos will reign throughout the Sword Coast. Death will stalk mountain and valley, hill and dale, country and city alike. The silence of the dead will descend upon the land. A bleak vision of the future indeed- and yet, all this depends on one thing; iron. Those few tools and weapons forged from the inferior ore mined from the iron mines at Nashkel are too brittle to use. Bandits steal iron as readily as they would steal gold, because the dire shortage of iron is rapidly making it just as valuable. Who, or what, is to blame? How can the iron supply be revitalized? How can that chilling vision of a future of starvation and misery be averted? Created and developed by Bioware, using their
Bioware Infinity engine, licensed and produced by Interplay, Baldur’s Gate
is distributed by Interplay’s own RPG division, Black Isle Studios -and
is fast becoming one of the most sought-after games in gaming history.
Unless your name is Rip Van Winkle, you could not have missed the gathering
excitement over this game- and if you did, you must have wondered just
how far Baldur’s Gate would justify the excitement it generates. The time
for speculation is past, now -it’s time to explore the innards of this
most fascinating game.
