You're a youngresearch scientist working at a
top-secret government facility. You probably
planned to work, earn money, do some research,
grow fat and maybe win a Nobel Prize for your contribution to physics.
Now, in one chaotic morning your world has been turned upside down. Ravenous
creatures from the back of beyond are crawling into your labs through a
rift in the
fabric of spacetime, your co-workers are fleeing
in horror and the government wants to kill you
and everybody else involved.
This just isn't your day.
Valve Software's Half-Life is based on a tried
and true plot: the innocent who is the wrong man at
the wrong place at the wrong time. However, the
story they've built around that plot is satisfyingly
rich and enthralling, dragging us down directly
into Gordon's head. Even as you take on inhuman monstrosities with a crowbar,
you're wondering frantically how this could have happened. Later,
as the government shock troops invade the Black
Mesa labs and start to slaughter humans and
aliens with equal abandon, you're also trying
to figure out who is behind all this and, quite simply,
what the hell is going on...
