Storyline

Your name is Gordon Freeman and you're a graduate working for the Black Mesa Research Center, an abandoned missile silo converted into a research facility for top-secret government-funded experimentation. You don't ask too many questions, because nobody would give you a straight answer anyway. You just do what you're told. One morning, after arriving half an hour late for work (and getting a dressing-down from your superiors about it) you're handling a critical experiment in the anomalous materials test chamber.
You're blithely confident despite the fact that due to the classified nature of much that happens at the Black Mesa Research Center, you really don't know what exactly it is that you're doing.
Maybe you did something wrong, maybe somebody else did, but suddenly there is an explosion and it finally begins to dawn on you (and research scientists are supposed to be quick on the uptake) that something is very horribly wrong and it might be all your fault. Now look what you've done: the fabric of our universe has been punctured, opening a rift into another world. And the things that inhabit that world are swarming through into yours, and the only thing about them that's recognizable is their hunger and their aggression.

Meanwhile, the government gets involved. You'd think they'd try to rescue you and your co-workers from the alien hordes...no, they're sending in the military with orders to shoot anything and everything in sight, including you. You're unarmed, and there's enough hardware out there to start World War Three. So grab a crowbar and get to work, you've got a busy day.

And while you're at it, you still have to figure it out. Come one, you're a research scientist, you figure things out for a living. How did this happen? Why is the government going to such drastically homicidal lengths to cover it up? Was this an accident or was it intended to happen? And if it was, who is behind this?
