StarCraft by Blizzard Entertainment

Review by

Introduction

Spacefaring races are apparently not the sharing type. As either the cunning and resourceful Terrans, or perhaps the nightmarish biomechanical Zerg, or maybe the psionically sophisticated and technologically advanced Protoss, you must strain your capabilities to the utmost in order to rid the galaxy of the other two species. In order to do so, you must create and utilize weapons of increasingly devastating effect, narture a fledgling colony into a sophisticated and self-sufficient base of operations, and anticipate & thwart both the machinations of enemy forces and the divisions within your own camp. Preceded by a huge amount of publicity and hype, and eagerly awaited by the gaming community since the early previews, StarCraft fulfils all expectations with ease, and effortlessly claims its place in the forefront of the strategy game field.

Blizzard Entertainment, who gave us great games like War Craft, War Craft II and Diablo, are no strangers to the strategy game field. With StarCraft, they have not given us anything particularly new, but they have taken the basic components of a strategy game and improved upon them. Thus, despite the lack of anything utterly new or revolutionary, the game weaves a fascinating storyline around a
solid interface, augmented with excellent movie clips. StarCraft is perhaps the classic strategy game: absorbing, challenging and immensely enjoyable.
