The Search for The Ideal PC:
A Tale of Two Systems

By Vajra Chandrasekera and Kanishka Wanasundera

February 10th, 1999

Every day, we receive scores of email asking us for advice on what PC components to buy.
This brought to our attention the fact that many end users deeply concerned with the innards of their machines are deprived of accurate information. All too often, people are forced to muddle through on the basis of information provided in hyped-up advertising campaigns. Oh, the information is out there, but so is a lot of misinformation. They don’t call it the Net of a Thousand Lies for nothing…

However, this is the 90s. Nothing is simple and clear-cut nowadays. Our search for the ideal PC led us to determine that there were actually two possibilities: one system for the average user and the other, specifically emphasizing performance, for the demanding user. The vital criterion shared by both systems is price: we’ve endeavored to keep the cost of both systems to a minimum while still maintaining quality. The average system can be built for an approximate $1900, while the high-end system will cost an estimated $2500. The latter is aimed specifically at the more demanding users, which includes the more powerhungry gamers as well as professionals looking for cheap processing power. As for the former system, don’t be discouraged by us calling it an “average” system- it is perfectly capable of anything you might demand from it and is ideal for anything from gaming to
surfing the web.

In this article, we’ll tell you the how, where and what to buy for both these ideal systems in this best
of all possible worlds. Read on, and enjoy.
