It’s been about one year now, one year of cutthroat competition between x2 and K56flex, and the two 56-kbps camps seem to have finally buried the pipe of peace. No more do users have to worry about which camp to side with- V.90 is the only remaining option. Just how much of a blessing that may be is what we’re here to find out. First of all, V.90 will not solve all your problems. You won’t be able to connect at 56kbps all the time, unless you’re receiving data. Line noise and distortion will still play merry hell with your file transfers, and not all ISPs have yet upgraded fully to V.90, so you might still have compatibility problems. On the other hand, V.90 modem prices are at an all-time low. As far as performance goes, US Robotics’ new 3Com
Courier V.Everything is one of the best V.90 modems available. It’s aimed
primarily at the corporate user market, and features remote management,
automatic redial, security features such as a password & dial-back
procedure, and a remote configuration option, allowing a network administrator
to configure the modem settings. It’s estimated street price, however,
is a somewhat steep $250.
