Once upon a time, we lived in a world where a laser printer was the only available option if we wanted high print quality. The choices were quite simple and clear-cut then, with home users flocking to cheaper InkJets and the laser printer being the choice of the business community. Things have changed since then. InkJet printers have improved drastically in past
years, with higher resolutions and higher print speeds. Still more recently,
Epson introduced new technology that they termed Micro Piezo, which changed
the way their InkJet printers worked, and in the process, sent the print
quality of InkJet printers spiraling exponentially upwards. Earlier, InkJet
printers heated the ink and then ejected it onto the page. At higher resolution,
this tended to cause splattering and reduce print quality. Micro
Piezo technology introduced an entirely new method of getting the ink onto
paper- electrical impulses. Since this didn’t involve heating the ink,
there is no splattering, and the output is correspondingly cleaner and
sharper. With their Stylus series, Epson have finally succeeded in
pushing the print quality of their InkJets into the range usually associated
with laser printers, and with the 850, in increasing the print speed considerably.
This is no mean feat, and a closer look at the Stylus Color 850 is in order.
