Music selected for testing
A wide variety of music is very important, since different
genres of music stress the encoding schemes in different ways. There
are also sound clips which are used to test audio compression systems.
We have used both these methods. While we cannot post the music
we compressed on the site for download, we have posted the encoded
clips and the links to obtain the originals if you wish to test
them for yourself. Given below is the list of CDs we encoded...
- • Money for Nothing - Dire Straits
- • Rivers of Belief - Enigma
- • Hard to swallow - Alanis Morissette
- • Titanic (soundtrack) - James
Horner
- • The Fat of the Land - Prodigy
- • Sixteen Stone - Bush
- • Vs - Pearl Jam
As you can imagine, this took us quite some time
to go through! Still, I wish I could have gotten the soundtrack of The
Matrix. Other than that, I hope to test Eric Clapton's acoustic performances.
If I do find anything varying from these results I shall post an update.
These two would have stayed on my hard drive for quite awhile. ; )
The sound clips which were used are;
-
• Applaud - A bit of audience applause which compression
schemes find hard to compress
-
• Castanets - A good test for temporal (time) artefacts
-
• Else - A clip of a song by Sarah Mclachlin which
has both vocal and drum beats with
-
complex background sounds
Well, now that you've put up with the rather long
(but necessary) preamble, let's get to the interesting part- the actual
results of the comparison.
