What Really Happened in 1998... Another frenzied year comes to an end. As usual, we're inundated with products- the newest, the biggest, and the best. 1998 has certainly been an eventful year for us all, with the introduction of Intel's BX chipset, 100MHz bus speed, PC100 RAM, AMD K6-2 with 3DNow!, third-generation 3D chips and an entirely new generation of games. Already existing technologies became faster, cheaper and more efficient- everything from CD-ROMs and 19” monitors to third-generation DVD drives. USB-based products flooded the market, DVD-ROMs reached the critical mass stage, digital cameras offered improved picture quality at lower prices and 3D sound really got off the ground. It's a wonder we haven't all been turned into zombies of delirious consumerism. In order to save you, our readers, from such a fate, we have compiled a list of those products that stand out from the crowd. If the time has come for you to do your duty as a consumer and you don't know what to choose, then look no further. This is the Most Wanted List of 1998, where we have gone to the trouble of balancing performance against price, requirements against results and expense against enjoyment. We've done this for you so that you needn't concern yourself with extensive research and messy comparisons -we took a month off just for that. We chose an average of ten products in each category given below, and after a month of rigorous evaluation, picked out the three best products in each category. We have based this selection on the price & performance of each product during the evaluation period, while taking bundled software & technical support into consideration where applicable. Please note, however, that such a selection is never entirely free of personal taste -some of you may not agree entirely with us- but we are confident that you will find this information useful. We'd like to thank all the manufacturers, developers & stores who supplied us with these products, and we'd particularly like to thank you, our readers, just for being there. You can navigate the article in the traditional
manner, but all the categories are listed below for your convenience.
