CD-ROMs
1. The
Asus CD-S400 (Ultra ATA/DMA) 40x
Asus has made this CD-ROM based on the Ultra DMA/33
interface
and a CLV design, with some additional features
such as antivibration. This $70 CD-ROM provides good performance without
the vibration
and noise we’ve come to expect from 40x CD-ROMs. |

2. The
Kenwood Multi Beam (Ultra ATA) 40x
Using Hi-Val’s unique TrueX technology, Kenwood’s
Multi Beam drive can split the laser beam into smaller multiple beams that
allow a larger area of the CD to be read in a second. This drive sustains
an impressive 6MB per second transfer rate in both inner and outer tracks,
and at $110, it’s only drawbacks are the price and some minor incompatibilities
with CD-R discs. Other than this, the Kenwood Multi Beam is a superlative
CD-ROM. |

3. Plextor UltraPleX 40max (Ultra
SCSI) CD-ROM
At $150, this is an excellent choice for a SCSI
CD-ROM. It may not have the fastest 40x performance, but it’s built by
Plextor, who are CD-ROM pioneers and old hands at this sort of thing. Its
overall performance is very impressive, even though, being a
SCSI CD-ROM, it is a little on the expensive
side. |
